Aus Amorbach (Odenwald); studierte an der Sorbonne bei Magister Johannes Heynlin, lebte als Druckergeselle oder Buchha\u0308ndler in Venedig und lie\u00df sich 1477 in Basel nieder. Als Drucker arbeitete er zuna\u0308chst vielfach mit Jacob Wolff von Pforzheim, ab 1502 mit Johannes Petri und Johannes Froben zusammen und stand in enger Gescha\u0308ftsverbindung zu Anton Koberger in Nu\u0308rnberg, fu\u0308r den er gro\u00dfe Druckauftra\u0308ge ausfu\u0308hrte. Sein Druck- und Verlagsprogramm war humanistisch ausgerichtet: wissenschaftlich einwandfreie Texte von Kirchenva\u0308tern, Klassikern und Humanisten. Dazu bediente er sich der Unterstu\u0308tzung durch Johannes de Lapide, Reuchlin, Sebastian Brant und Beatus Rhenanus. Jeweils ein Exemplar seiner Drucke schenkte er der Basler Kartause, aus der er Handschriften fu\u0308r die Textausgaben heranzog. Sein Sohn Basilius fu\u0308hrte das Gescha\u0308ft fort ; Roth, Carl. - Stammtafeln einiger ausgestorbener Basler Gelehrtenfamilien: verh.
