Die Zeitgenossen ru\u0308hmten ihn als vorzu\u0308gl. Philologen und Bibelexegeten. Seine Vorlesungen fanden durch Schu\u0308lernachschriften Verbreitung in weiten Kreisen. Neben seiner Lehrta\u0308tigkeit wirkte er als vielfa\u0308ltiger und produktiver Publizist. Er vero\u0308ffentlichte eine hebra\u0308ische Grammatik (1535, 1. Teil), gab eine Sammlung von Briefen Zwinglis und Oekolampads heraus (1536), fu\u0308hrte die lat. Bibelu\u0308bersetzung Leo Juds nach dessen Tod (1542) zu Ende und publizierte einen herausragenden Apokalypsenkommentar (1545). Zahlreich waren zudem seine apologet. und polem. Schriften. Durch zwei Werke erwarb sich B. bleibende Bedeutung: Mit der 1543 bei Johannes Oporinus in Basel gedruckten lat. Koranu\u0308bersetzung ero\u0308ffnete er der europ.
